WHAT IS THE NCT?
The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) was set up in 1956 by a group of mothers. Forty plus years on it is now an internationally recognised organisation with a Head Office in London and over 350 branches covering most of the UK.
The NCT's special interest is preparation for childbirth and education for parenthood and wants all parents to have an experience of pregnancy, birth and early parenthood that enriches their lives and gives them confidence in being a parent. The local NCT branches offer support and friendship on a local level whilst on a national level funded by over 40,000 members the NCT continues to campaign on behalf of parents to get the best from the maternity services provided and is represented on almost all NHS Maternity Liaison Committees and other consultative bodies.
The NCT has been at the forefront in every improvement in maternity care in Britain for the last 40 years and it is largely due to the NCT that today it is possible for fathers to be present at the birth of their children. The NCT leads the campaign to halt the rise in unnecessary caesarean births and seeks to make sure that every woman has a midwife she gets to know & trust.
Our services do not replace the medical care that you receive from your GP, Midwife and Health Visitor - merely complements their service by providing additional information and support on a more informal basis, based on our own practical experience as parents. We also call on the expertise of trained NCT workers who are available to give information and support on many common problems of pregnancy and early parenthood.
